Michell was born in 1724 inside the village of Eakring, England, the son of Gilbert Michell, the parish rector, and his wife Obedience Gerrard. Educated at your home alongside his youthful brother and sister, John had an early reputation for fast learning and perceptiveness. According to the historian Russell McCormmach, his father Gilbert enjoyed
